Here are some things to remember about Sexually Transmitted Infections:
Anyone having unprotected sex (sex without a condom) with a new partner is at risk. Including oral, vaginal and anal sex
It is best to use a condom with a new partner, at least for the first three months until both people can be tested
STI tests are NOT painful, they are quick and simple. Most tests can be done yourself, without an examination
You may not have any symptoms, many people don’t even know they have a STI
Most STIs can be treated
Syphilis is on the rise in NZ, but it is easy to diagnose with a blood test
Diagnosing genital warts and herpes requires a very quick examination
Some people may be eligible for PrEP (HIV prevention).
